Frequently asked questions
How long will a Powerwall keep my house running during a PSEG LI outage?
Depends on your loads. A single Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) will run essentials (fridge, lights, internet, well pump) for 12-24 hours. Two Powerwalls with solar can typically keep most Long Island homes running indefinitely until the grid returns.
Do I have to have solar to install a Powerwall?
No, but it is strongly recommended. Without solar, the battery only discharges what it stored from the grid before the outage. With solar, it recharges every sunny day and can sustain you indefinitely.
Does the federal solar tax credit apply to a battery?
Yes. As of 2023 the Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) covers standalone battery storage of 3 kWh or larger, including labor, at 30% through 2032.
What's the difference between Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3?
Powerwall 3 (current model) has higher continuous output (11.5 kW vs 5 kW) and built-in solar inverter capability, simplifying solar+battery installs. Powerwall 2 is still serviced and supported but is no longer the default install.
Where do you install the Powerwall?
Most Long Island Powerwalls go on an exterior wall (rated −20 °F to 122 °F) or in the garage. Tesla's spec requires clearance and a non-flammable backing per the install manual.
Will the Powerwall be loud?
No. The Powerwall is silent under normal operation. The internal cooling fan only runs occasionally during high charge or discharge events and is barely audible.
Can I add a Powerwall to my existing solar system?
Yes. AC-coupled Powerwalls integrate with most existing SolarEdge, Enphase, and string-inverter systems on Long Island. We confirm compatibility during the design phase.
