Why does PSEG LI take weeks for a battery?

Energy storage requires its own interconnection review under PSEG Long Island's Smart Inverter / Energy Storage Interconnection process, separate from the original solar PV interconnection. PSEG LI needs to verify that the inverter and Backup Gateway pass UL 1741-SB and IEEE 1547-2018 anti-islanding requirements before allowing parallel operation.

Do I need a building permit too, or just electrical?

Most Suffolk towns require an electrical permit and a building permit (the building permit confirms structural mounting load and clearance to combustibles). A handful of towns combine them; your installer pulls whichever your jurisdiction (Huntington, Brookhaven, Islip, Babylon, etc.) requires.
